Kitchen Remodel (Before & After)

This charming old house in Northamptonshire underwent a complete kitchen remodel.

Updating a kitchen in a period building can be difficult, to say the least. At A Spencer Construction we like to take the middle ground, somewhere between modern and classic (because classic never dates). We love renovating, refurbishing and remodelling kitchens. But most of all we like to use quality traditional materials, including; aged brass, forged iron, solid woods, granites and stone. With these materials and a quality builder, you can’t go wrong.

You can see from the before and after photos, there is a remarkable transformation from a dark and gloomy small kitchen to a wonderfully bright and airy family space.

To start the project the kitchen was stripped-out, measured and then redesigned. In the original layout, the kitchen was pushed to one end making it feel small and with barely any storage. The main double cooker wall was extended the full length of the kitchen, which drew the eye from one end to the other.

Each feature of this kitchen was carefully chosen for the building. The kitchen units were made in solid wood painted in Farrow and Balls Hague Blue. Beautiful white Carrara marble granite worktops. Solid oak plank doors, waxed and finished with iron fittings. Solid brass cup handles. And finally, for the floor, large limestone flag/tiles were carefully selected, laid in a brick format and then sealed.

Our three ‘Loves’ of this kitchen which make a real difference to the space were:

1. Worktops extend into the window area. This created not only a great usable area but reflected the light 10-fold.
2. Breakfast Bar – The shape of the room wasn’t suitable for an island, but a right-angle breakfast bar made the most of an awkward area where the wall jutted out.
3. And finally, the fantastic family-hub computer screen built into the fridge. Nothing to do with our building, but a real hit in creating this beautiful family kitchen, beaming full of light, character, and turning this period house into a home.
